Pets are placed in foster care for many reasons. They may be too young, they may be sick or injured, or need socialization or training. Our volunteer foster families provide temporary homes for animals that are not yet ready for adoption. Through this program, hundreds of animals are able to have a second chance to find their forever homes.
What are the foster parent's responsibilities? Fostering animals will require consistent care. You will be responsible for providing a safe and suitable environment for the foster animal, along with food, water, basic training, and of course lots of love and socialization! Fostering pets can be a positive experience for the whole family. The foster experience can last a few days to several weeks, depending on the needs of the pet. Some fosters will need to be provided with daily medications. You must follow the prescription and protocols given by the HSVB medical staff. When vaccines or other boosters are due, you will need to bring the foster pet back to the HSVB for a booster appointment. The Foster Program Coordinator will schedule these appointments with you. Foster parents also get involved with the pet's adoption, and provide our volunteers with information for the pet's online profile. Consider what types of foster cases you can take. Take into account your schedule, lifestyle and animal experience. Are you able to bottle feed kittens every two hours throughout the night? Are you comfortable with an adult dog that needs some training? Who covers the expenses? HSVB covers basic vet care (vaccinations, heartworm prevention, Flea and tick prevention, spay/neuter), as well as food, crates and cat litter as funds allow. Incidentals such as leashes, toys, bowls, etc. are provided by HSVB. Ready for the next steps? |
