breaking news:The rest of the South Korean dogs will be made available for adoption as their health and social skills improve. And of course, we will let our friends on social media know when these other dogs are ready.
The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County is located at 6230 77th St., Vero Beach. Our phone number is (772) 388-3331 ext. 110. We look forward to seeing you here at the shelter. DARK GREEN BACKGROUND COLOR

11 SOUTH KOREAN DOGS now READY FOR ADOPTION.The time has finally come for our first group of dogs from South Korea to meet their adoring public. Beginning Wednesday, February 15 at 11:00 a.m., we will be taking adoption applications for 11 of the South Korean dogs.
Adoption applications will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Importantly, our adoption decisions will be made from those applicants who, based on our screening and review, our staff deems qualified to adopt these special dogs. On Wednesday, we will be doing extensive adoption screening so that we can give these dogs and their new families every opportunity for success.

On January 17, 2017, the first group of dogs rescued from a South Korean dog meat farm arrived in Orlando, destined for new homes in Vero Beach. Over the next few days, dozens of Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County animal rescue staff transported newly arrived animals from Orlando to our shelter, providing them with loving care and comfort, evaluating and monitoring their condition around-the-clock, and attending to their physical and medical needs.
Once living in horrific conditions and destined for slaughter, these dogs are now comfortably preparing for new lives in South Florida. Some of them have been moved to other shelters in South Florida to prepare for their adoption and 20 dogs remain at the Humane Society of Vero Beach. One has even given birth to puppies after the long trip from South Korea. As these animals become ready, they will be offered for adoption. Our goal is to quickly find suitable homes for all of these deserving creatures. Please check back frequently for updates on the dogs’ conditions and their progress here in their new country. Progress Reports1/17: Initial 10 dogs are retrieved at Orlando International Airport and brought to Shelter. Staff spends much of the night with these dogs, ensuring that they settle in comfortably.
1/17 - 1/22: Shelter staff continues transporting animals to the Vero Beach Shelter until all available animals are received.
1/21: We have already begun to socialize these animals. The process is different from most dogs we meet, as many of these animals have never been outside a cage. Some have never stepped on grass before.
1/23: Guess what? One of the Korean dogs, Toffee, gave birth to 9 puppies. Mother and puppies are requiring extra care, but they are doing surprisingly well. Now, we're in need of a few more good homes. :)
1/24: Some of these dogs were transferred to other cooperating South Florida shelters where they will soon be read for adoption. Nearly two dozen dogs remain under the care of our Shelter.
1/28: Volunteers have started working with the dogs. Some volunteers are working on leash skills while others read to the dogs.
2/1: Thanks to United Airlines employees Lori Valdez and Stephen Preston for helping our staff with our last arrival of Korean dogs. We are grateful!
2/2: The dogs are enjoying a regular bathing schedule.
2/13: Eleven of the dogs are being readied for their adoption "debut" this week.
2/15: Adoptions open for eleven dogs deemed ready for connecting with carefully elected homes.
2/17 Five of the dogs have been adopted. Others are still available for adoption, but there are a few who aren't quite ready to interact with people yet. Our staff and volunteers are still working day to day to help these dogs become more sociable and trust people.
